The Driest Desert Out There

When it comes to the EOTO we did in class, I ended up with the term "news deserts". At first, I had no idea what that meant and was incredibly confused as to what that meant. Once I did research into it I wasn't as surprised by what it meant but actually by how much of the United States is affected by this.

News deserts are areas either rural or urban, with limited access to credible or comprehensive news and information. This means that these areas are unable to find a reliable news source as easily as those who aren't in a news desert. The idea of a news desert is really scary because it can cause uninformed opinions on important topics. Living in a news desert, it can be hard to find a reliable source and if the one news source in your area is no longer reliable, opinions can become biased off of misinformation.

What is truly terrifying, based on the map above which can be seen in more detail here, is how many news deserts there are. There are a huge amount of counties all over the country that either have one newspaper or NO newspapers. The fact that so many people could have unreliable news to follow is scary for this country. 225 counties don't have a single local newspaper, meaning that they are going to have the toughest time in the country to get reliable news, whether that be local or at a national level. If this continues to happen, we could see bigger and bigger news deserts begin to pop up all across the country.
